He Made Me Angry

Anticipating a man who might need a med neb treatment for complaint of difficulty breathing, I started preparing all the gadgets I needed to initiate the treatment. So as not to waste time knowing that I just had an inmate who was not responding to any medication from his asthma attack few days ago.

Gathering the albuterol solution, and while telling the LVN’s about this sick call request, one of the medication nurses asked me if it was Mr. W. coming.

“Yes,” “Why? What’s up with him?”

“He got so upset with me because he wanted his bedtime Keppra, yet it was only ordered for mornings.”

“Oh no!” “I bet you, he was more than upset about this and doesn’t really have problem with his breathing,” I sensed it right away.

As I was laying down the stuff I needed, a shackled inmate walked in, escorted by their unit deputy. He was belligerent and was just talking, complaining rapidly, demanding for all his needs. He was so loud that every medical staff’s head turned to him.

I motioned for him to sit down, next to all the gadgets I had prepared earlier.

“Sir, what brings you here?” “Are you really having trouble breathing? What are your medical conditions?”

“You should know that! Don’t you have my chart? You guys don’t do anything anyway.”

Trying to remain patient, the deputy cut him off and warned him that he would be put to discipline for disrespecting me. Usually, I would allow the deputy to do their jobs of yelling at the inmates being disobedient or just plainly rude with staff, like me. But this time, seeing how he was acting, I couldn’t tolerate his behavior and knew I had to say something about that.

“Sir, for the record, yes, I do know your medical conditions before you came down here. But I always ask anyone who comes here sick, to double-check with them. So that if there are any medical or mental problems that are not addressed before, I usually add it and have the doctor see….”

“What? You don’t give me my meds anyway? How about my medication for my emphysema?” he loudly interrupted me. Sensing that the deputy was truly upset with him this time, I felt that he wanted to shove him against the wall for being so disrespectful with anyone from the start. But giving respect to me, he remained calm and hearing that I was able to defend myself, he let me do my thing. I nodded at him as if to give me time to talk with this belligerent inmate.

“You are not having trouble breathing, I can tell you that. Do not fake your medical emergencies or I can put you on discipline. You are down here because you want your meds that are not given. May I tell you som…”

“I don’t really care. I don’t give a _ _ _ _! You guys don’t do anything!”

“One more time…You’re gonna’ get it! Do not interrupt her! I’m warning you again! Don’t interrupt her!” intervened the deputy while he kept on letting me speak for myself.

“Where are my bedtime meds?” he continued to mumble.

“It was only…”

“How come they didn’t give me my bedtime dose?” he interrupted me again.

This time, I raised my voice a little with authority, “Will you let me speak? Every time I try to speak, you keep interrupting me with your dirty mouth! How are you going to understand if you are not giving me a chance to even review your chart? You come here like you’re the only sick inmate. There are more than 3,000 of you here. And a big number is sick, a lot sicker than you. But if you are being patient, our doctor here tries to address everyone’s medical issue.”

I’m surprised that there was no interruption this time. He just glanced at me and shut his mouth as he didn’t expect for me to raise my voice.

“The doctor just ordered your medication to be twice a day. It wasn’t put in the computer yet as we are still doing the orders from our doctor. When you asked the LVN earlier in your unit, she couldn’t give it to you because the new order for twice a day was not put in our system yet. So, I’ll go ahead and give you the bedtime dose now.”

He remained silent with me, but still was just talking back with his unit deputy. I’m glad the deputy remained calm. I knew he was giving me respect…Still…this man would be put on discipline because he talked back with profanities to the deputy. Getting up from his chair, his mouth continued to complain…

“Thank you, Ma’am,” uttered the deputy.

“No. Thank you…” I knew he got my message of him being calm despite the nasty behavior we witnessed. And of him letting me speak for myself!

The inmate couldn’t look me in the eye. He remained loud the whole time but was not even looking at me nor complaining to me.

I got angry at that inmate. With his disrespectful behavior. That was just uncalled for. All of us struggle with anger…Don’t we all say “Jesus showed righteous anger?” He did at the temple. But it was because he saw that people were disrespecting God. And taking advantage of the poor. Jesus got angry whenever the poor were mistreated. He became indignant when the children were not allowed to see him. His was all display of righteous anger. He got angry when others were mistreated yet he wasn’t angry when he was treated unfairly. How did he react when people treated him unjustly? He said on the cross, “Father, forgive them.”

Anger is not always wrong but we have to be careful that it doesn’t turn us into evil. If our being angry just serves our own desires or purposes, then that’s not righteous anger.

“26In your anger do not sin: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27and do not give the devil a foothold.” ~ Ephesians 4:26-27

Let's Work Together

I hate the fact that I don’t feel unity at my workplace. It probably sounds true to some of you, where you work. Don’t get me wrong! Yes, we, medical staff, help each other during crisis at work, like treating emergencies, helping out each other when the load is too much for one. But I’m talking about the bias I feel and is evident. Like some leaders would favor some group, though they are lazy. They don’t see it that way. Things like that. So, some of the load are done by others who don’t mind doing the work without complaining.

I wish our highest manager would come down and visit all...Like a surprise and really see who’s working hard and who is not. Who is gossiping and sleeping at work instead of doing what they were hired to do. Things like that.

Sometimes, maybe it’s better, like in a church, there is a division. 1 Corinthians 11:19 says that “For there must also be factions among you, in order that those who are approved may have become evident among you.” But we all know, too much of a thing always end up in disaster.

I think it is a sign that we fall from the truth when we see bickering and disunity among us, Christians. Even sadder in our spiritual state when we are like this because we don’t need a surprise visit from our Manager. He sees it all. Jesus is not divided. We are.

I can hear Him saying everyday:

“Make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose.” - Philippians 2:2 [NASB]

Our kind of worship does not affect our salvation. It’s sad when one’s pride gets in the way instead of having God’s love in our hearts. Maybe it’s time to say: “Let’s work together despite our differences”, instead of “I’m right, you’re wrong.”

[Someone surely is having fun watching us divided, instead of being united in Christ]…

Please visit and be united with other brothers and sisters in Christ in this blogosphere. Please go to Spiritual Sundays to be encouraged by many uplifting posts. God bless and please pray for me and my workplace.

Concern and Compassion

"If you think you are too important to help someone in need, you are only fooling yourself. You are really a nobody." - Galatians 6:3

“Over here, nurse!” exclaimed a still sleepy inmate from among the others who were roused by the sudden bright lights that were turned on from their unit’s control. His face looked sleepy yet so much concern was painted over his cellie [cellmate] who was down on the floor.

The deputy told us the rest. That inmate was holding the downed inmate with all his strength as he started having seizure, and made sure he won’t hit his head on the metal bunk bed nor on the floor. He got hit with the seizuring inmate’s flopping arm on his right eye.

As we treated the downed inmate first and after stabilizing his condition, the other nurse was summoned by the deputy to look at the injured inmate who tried to help the man with the seizure.

“What? There is nothing wrong with your eye! It would be okay!” uttered the other nurse loudly and very audible to others who were now all conscious of the incident. “Be a man!” she continued…

“What do you mean it’s okay? It got hit!” he said like a little child.

I glanced at his direction. Seeing it was only slightly red and not bleeding nor bluish, I hollered, “Sir, it looks okay right now. But if in case you would feel something that gets worse with the coming days, I want you to please put a nurse sick call so we can evaluate it again.”

Seeing his frustration with the other nurse, he turned his head toward me and with a soft voice replied, “Thank you, Ma’am for letting me know.” He nodded his head once as he acknowledged my advice.

“Does it hurt?“ I queried.

“Not yet,” he replied.

“Good…But like what I said, if anything gets worse, let the bubble [unit deputy/control] know.”

“Thank you, Ma’am.”

The ambulance finally arrived and took the downed inmate to be brought to the county’s hospital.

“See ya later buddy!” yelled the inmate who helped him.

Jonah was given a task by the Lord to bring His message to the people of Nineveh, to turn away from their sins. Jonah knew that doing so, the people would turn from their sins and worship God, even if his preaching would be weak, because of the power of God’s message. But he hated the Assyrians [people of Nineveh]. He wanted vengeance, not mercy given to them. So he ran…He thought he could...

He went on board a ship leaving for Tarshish. But as the boat was sailing along, the Lord flung a powerful wind over the sea, causing a violent storm that threatened to sink the boat [Jonah1:4].

“Throw me into the sea,” Jonah said, “and it will become calm again. For I know that this terrible storm is all my fault.”

“Instead, the sailors tried even harder to row the boat ashore. But the stormy sea was too violent for them, and they couldn’t make it.”- Jonah 1:12,13

That inmate who helped another and those sailors who tried to save Jonah’s life showed more compassion than that nurse and Jonah. The nurse didn’t want to do any extra work. Jonah didn’t want to do God’s task of trying to save the people of Nineveh from His judgment.

Believers must be ashamed when unbelievers show more care and concern and compassion toward others. For God wants us to be concerned for all of the people, both lost and saved.

Power Struggle

“Our scientific power has outrun our spiritual power. We have guided missiles and misguided men.” ~ Martin Luther King, Jr.

Though this clip was from a jail in Los Angeles, California, the hunger for power and control between different races occur in most of the detention or correctional facilities all over the nation. It doesn’t exclude my workplace.

Careful attention is given when arrestees come in from the streets and are booked in. Even if 2 people belong to the same race, the deputies who assign the housing for them have to make sure that they don’t miss any crucial information about these people. Being a gang member while the other may not be, is a thing to consider so that fights are avoided.

No matter how careful, fights do occur. And where there are big fights, nurses are very much involved in evaluating and treating injuries. It’s even harder when there is a great number involved. Triaging whoever is bleeding and most of them are. Sometimes, unfortunately, there are fatalities.

It’s sad when that kind of mentality of “I’m better than you” or “I’m stronger than you” exist inside these thick walls. And colors matter. The fact is: they are all inmates, no matter what color, no matter what social backgrounds. They all committed crimes outside and they are there to pay for those crimes.

It is sad when Christians also fight and hurt the cause for Christ. True Christians should not persecute each other. Unfortunately, this is still happening from many centuries ago up to this time. [From Life Application Bible; emphasis is mine]:

Paul once envisioned a church where all the Jews and Gentiles would be united in their love of God and in obedience to Christ. While respecting God’s law, this ideal church would look to Christ alone for salvation. A person’s ethnic background and social status would not be significant [Galatians 3:28 - “There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male or female. For you are all Christians - you are one in Christ Jesus.”]

“Accept Christians who are weak in faith, and don’t argue with them about what they think is right or wrong.” - Romans 14:1

“Who are you to condemn God’s servants? They are responsible to the Lord, so let him tell them whether they are right or wrong. The Lord’s power will help them do as they should.” - Romans 14:4

“For we are not our own masters when we live or when we die. While we live, we live to please the Lord. And when we die, we go to be with the Lord. So in life and in death, we belong to the Lord. Christ died and rose again for this very purpose, so that he might be Lord of those who are alive and of those who have died.” - Romans 14:7-9

“So why do you condemn another Christian? Why do you look down on another Christian? Remember, each of us will stand personally before the judgment seat of God. For the Scriptures say, “ ‘As surely as I live,’ says the Lord, ‘every knee will bow to me and every tongue will confess allegiance to God.” - Romans 14:10,11

“Yes, each of us will give personal account to God. So don’t condemn each other anymore. Decide instead to live in such a way that you will not put an obstacle in another Christian’s path.” - Romans 14:12,13

“For the Kingdom of God is not a matter of what we eat or drink, but of living a life of goodness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. If you serve Christ with this attitude, you will please God. And other people will approve of you, too. So then, let us aim for harmony in the church and try to build each other up.” - Romans 14:17-19
