                                                               Different Kinds of Onions

“Life is like an onion: you peel it off one layer at a time, and sometimes you weep.”
~ Carl Sandburg

Tears started flowing. As I removed my eyeglasses and started squinting my eyes from the burn I felt immediately after. I started feeling better yesterday, Thursday. No more nagging cough. No more box of tissues nearby.

“Why don’t you rest?” queried my hubby.

“Because you know me, I can’t sit around.”

He was concerned because I never rested the entire week that I was sick. I had been thanking God for giving me the strength that He sustained me with. That I was able to clean, cook, wash dirty clothes.

I always try to make something early for dinner. I made a sour broth with the beef I had in the freezer. Because it was easy to make. Just chop up tomatoes, onions and added the veggies I had in the freezer. I didn’t want to waste any.I wanted to use the lemons I bought the other day.

I was chopping up those onions when I felt the stinging, tangy scent that wafted under my nostrils. I was thankful it didn’t become a “crying fest”.

Onions remind me of us. How we all look different. How some can produce mild or others, strong aromas. Same aromas that give the taste or flavor of what is being cooked.

“Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 17For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”
~ 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 [NIV]

  2. Oh Rosel! First of all I am glad you are feeling better! You are alot like one of my friends...she won't stop for ANYTHING!! :)

Oh Gosh !!! This video is soooo true. I have to say that when I learned this lesson it was sooo hard to be peeled and then to learn it came in LAYERS??

Sometimes it was REALLY STINKY while others just plain painful but no matter what came off it was ALWAYS for the best and continues to be that way! I just told DH the other day.."we must be getting through yet another layer....HOW many could there possibly be???" He just smiled at me and said "It is ok (as he held me tight and continued on) ~ as many as the Lord needs to remove ~that is how many there are!"

Thank goodness HE loves us more than to leave us the way we are!!

Have a blessed weekend Rosel. Love you

  6. Glad you are recovering. And really liked the discussion of the onion, and the opening quote. I don't do well peeling onions, usually, but I do love to eat them.

Thanks for the nice comments about the deer antlers.

  12. Oh how true is the video. The first two removals : roots and crown are SO necessary. Then our precious Lord can work on steadily peeling away the outer layers. I followed your link through Regina's post and am so glad I did. Pleased to meet you, Sister - in - Christ. I am following your blog now. I pray for your continued healing and well-ness. Blessings Jo PS: Your hubby is right: rest a bit.

  14. I love to eat onions when they are cooked in other foods but raw onions give me the creeps and make me cry. Mrs. Geezer is the designated onion peeler in our family.

  17. Lucky for me I wear contacts so have no trouble at all cutting onions. Before that I always put them in a zip-lock bag. The knife cuts the onion but surprisingly the bag stays almost totally in tact.

Love the video and yes, I too, will remember His body, all varieties, just like the onions.

    Great post. Thank you.

  18. I love the way God is speaking to us all the time if we will but open our eyes and ears to see and hear. Thanks for sharing this with us.

  19. How interesting. I love the onion video. I love onions. We eat them all the time. I find the sweet onions don't make me cry. Maybe like "sweet" people? Sometimes I buy what I think is a sweet onion and when I cut into it and eat it, I find it is very strong. I had never thought about it before, but I guess onions are a lot like people. Thanks for sharing and I'm glad you're feeling better.
    Blessings,
    Charlotte

  20. Great video, Rosel! Never would have thought of this analogy. As Charlotte pointed out, looks can be deceiving, but thankfully God knows and looks upon our hearts.
