I Don't Want To Be A Nurse

Years ago, my life long dream was to become an architect. I passed the college entrance exam in this university, known to be the top school back home. It was hard to get in. As excited as I was, my excitement died down instantly when my mom brought me to a dorm where I was supposed to live and which was very near to the school, run by nuns. Hearing all the strict rules doused my dream that wanted to go past beyond drawing on “Etch-A-Sketch” and lots of scribbling with different kinds of coloring materials.

That time was wasted. I ended up not taking Architecture as paperworks and opportunity to study here in USA happened. My second choice was to become a doctor. I love studying the effects of illnesses in a person’s body and even more so, to be involved in the healing process. Medicine would seem forever to take and costly. God opened a way. I became a nurse.

To make a long story short, I had been working in an Orthopedic part of a major hospital for almost 10 years. Until a neck injury occurred [did it? Or that was God’s way of bringing me to another place] and the severity of pain just made it impossible to stay any longer. He opened another road. One that led to Correctional Nursing. I have been working here in this facility for 10 years now. Today! Yes, today marks my 10th year as a prison nurse.

What about my dream of becoming an architect? God did grant it in my heart still. For since He found me, I have been working to improve my spiritual house. But even better. As He partnered with me. Yes, God is the Master Architect. You know Him. He only built the universe! Piece of cake for my Boss! The neat thing? He is also the Supplier of all that I need. You know, to build my life, redo my intentions and desires.

So being a nurse now? I don’t mind. Because I still get to do my first love of being an architect. I still draw plans. As long as I commit all of them with Him, nothing will go wrong [Proverbs 3:5,6]. I use Him as my foundation [Ephesians 2:20]. I can choose strong materials to make my house strong and sturdy against all the bad elements [Ephesians 6:10- “Be strong in the Lord’s mighty power”.]

I have the Master Architect available to help me out 24/7. It doesn’t matter where I am or what I am doing. I know I am not limited now to what I want to do. Knowing that through Christ, I can do everything! [Philippians 4:13].

Psalm 127:1 - Except The LORD build The House, they labour in vain that build it: except The Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.

I Corinthians 3:11 - For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

  1. Dear Rosel,
This is such a good post...and you are where you are now because that is your kingdom assignment. God knows exactly that you are the person for that place, to let his light shine, and speak hope to the people who are in a dark place, physically and spiritually.

I loved how you said that you still get to practice you first love. Never would have seen it that way! I just love it...yes, we're drawing plans, and getting to renovate some old rooms, adding fresh touches of beauty and grace, strengthening our shaky foundations, getting rid of rough edges...beautiful thoughts for today that really inspired me!

  2. Having followed this blog for awhile now I consistently note what an excellent nurse you are and how you continually are a source of blessing to those inmates, guards and fellow nurses. It's exciting to read how God worked in your life to bring you to where you are. Congratulations on ten years there!

  3. Hi Rosel,

After you and Libby commented about my
Mrs. Geezer Saves The Day post, I think I've seen the Light.

If you get a chance go back and check out the follow up comments,
    God bless you, Ron

BTW I wanted to send this by email but I couldn't find one linked back to your blog (sorry)

  4. You not only nurse what's obvious...but I have a feeling you also give them an inspiration!

  5. I teared up over this testimony Rosel. Your heart is so beautiful!!! And how Mightily He uses it because you have surrendered it freely to Him. To God alone be the Glory & praise!
    Love you friend!

  6. Congratulations on 10 years! Isn't it funny how God's plans are much better than our own? I hope are have a great weekend. We got 4 inches of snow today (and it's still coming down) so Madison didn't have to visit her dad this weekend. Woo Hoo! Going to be fun times at my house :)

  7. Wow, ten years. Congrats sis, love you.

  8. You, my sweet friend are a kingdom builder and Architect for CHRIST...no better job out there!

    Hugs, love, and prayers,

  9. Congratulations on your 10 year anniversary!

God is using you to help build His kingdom in so many ways.

Thanks for coming back to read my post. That was so sweet. I felt so bad that it was so long but felt it was needed.

I'm so glad I came by today. I love this post.

  10. Sweet Sister,

I loved hearing about your life, your plans and where it all started and most of all I've come to love you so much because of your extreme love and faithfulness in our Lord and for His people. He guides your every step and I see you walking beside Him with a great big smile across your face...yes, you and your heavenly Father side-by-side, hand-in-hand as He continues to fill you more and more and more to overflowing all over every one of us. That's what you do, that's who you are and who He has made you to be...overflowing in Him, filled with so much love, praise and thanksgiving and spilling all of His love and greatness on to every one of us and those in your work place and the inmates.

You steadfastly continue to fill me up and up and up...oh I just love coming to visit you. I may not always get here as I would like, but boy when I do, it's hallelujah time for me.

Love you my precious precious friend,

  11. Rosel, Im not feeling so well tonight. Shhhh its a secret. I came by because I knew you would be here. :) Silly yes? Thank you for all you do.

  12. I have read your blog for sometime now and I truly believe that God has you exactly where He wants you...I believe through you the men that you nurse see Him - our Father..... You are a blessing to all and I am so thankful I have found you, my sister in Christ,.
    Love to you

  13. When I think of a nurse, I think of the many women that accompanied the Lord; their daily ministrations to Him and others. They are often included in the scriptural text with such subtle respect. They were/are treasured. What a calling!

    Congrats; and blessings too,

  14. Beautiful story! Congrats on your 10th Year.

You are blessing no matter where you are.
    Go bless you always.

Pray for me. That I may be blessings too
    Some trials along the way..

    In His Love.

The Attacker (5/15/09)

The sun was just peeking from the Eastern skies. Ephesians 6:12 [37 kb]

Out in the prison’s yard, some huge Sheriff’s buses were illuminated by the soft glow coming from the lights all over from the tall lamp posts. Their engines were turned on, warming up, before the buses would take the inmates to the different courts where they would have their trials.

Orange-uniformed men were lined up in pairs, joined together with handcuffs and chained, forming a long line. They already had their breakfast and had their morning medications prior to going to courts. Some were fidgeting, as they waited to board those buses.

All of a sudden, all hell broke loose! Two men were engaged in a fight, using weapons they made secretly for a while. Deputies called for help on the radio, both for custody back-up and medical staff, as well.

When the air was cleared and the other inmates were secured, one man was down on the floor. He sustained multiple gashes but two of them were deep. One cut was vertically etched from his left ear going down to the jaw line. The other dangerous cut was horizontal on his left neck, close to the jugular vein. Pool of blood dripped all over the floor. Holding his bleeding neck, he was pointing at the other inmate few feet away, being guarded by the other deputies.

The other man being accused was not hurt. There were no lacerations nor any other signs of trauma. He was obviously very agitated as he was being questioned by those deputies, while the medical staff started treating the other man on the floor. They cleaned the wounds and controlled the bleeding. That man was sent to the nearby hospital.

When the investigation was finalized, it turned out to be that the “downed man who was accusing the other inmate” was the attacker and the other one who didn’t have injury was the one attacked. The deputies found out that it was the second attempt to attack the unhurt man. Both attacks on him failed. He was well-prepared after the first attempt on him, that when the second attempt was done, he was able to defend himself and ended up injuring his attacker severely.

We also have an “accuser of the brethren.” Satan and his army of demons are the enemies of God and of everything good.

“Because God’s children are human beings – made of flesh and blood – Jesus also became flesh and blood by being born in human form. For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the Devil, who had the power of death.” –Hebrews 2:14

Because of what Jesus had done [dying on the cross], we, who live in constant fear of death shouldn’t be afraid anymore. Jesus had freed us from that fear so we can live for Him. When we belong to God, we know that death is only the portal that leads into “eternal life”. [“Thank You Lord!].

Paul warned us, too that we also battle against the evil forces of Satan, who is a vicious fighter. But to be able to withstand their attacks, we must depend on God’s strength and use every piece of His armor. We face an army whose goal is to defeat Christ’s church. When we believe in Christ, they become our enemies. They will try any device to turn us away from the Lord.

Fear not! For God has provided His supernatural power to defeat Satan and his army, through His Holy Spirit within us. So, arm yourselves with God’s armor.

Let us be strong in the Lord's mighty power. Let's put on His whole armor to resist the enemy's attacks: put on the sturdy belt of truth and the body armor of God's righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News, so that we are well-prepared. We will need faith in every battle as our shield to stop the fiery arrows aimed by Satan and his army. Let us put on salvation as our helmet, not forgetting the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. Let's pray at all times, on every occasion in the power of the Holy Spirit. We must stay alert and be persistent in our prayers for all Christians everywhere. [Ephesians 6:10-18].
