Lazy! Lazy! Lazy!

"Laziness is nothing more than the habit of resting before you get tired..." ~ Jules Renard

I was trying to prepare my stuff together as I counted the slow 15 minutes before my shift was over. Then, the kitchen deputy showed up, bringing an injured inmate who was hobbling his way into the Clinic. The chart was given to me.

“What happened?”

“I was lifting a milk crate when I accidentally dropped it on my right foot. It hurts so bad right now,” a young male inmate answered, grimacing as he spoke.

“Remove your right shoe so I can see.”

Slowly, he tried to slide off the blue, soft shoe as he bit his lips. On top of his right foot, redness and tenderness were visible and palpable. He could barely move his toes because of the pain.

Prior to talking with him, I had read his chart to get familiar with him. He was one of those inmate workers, working in the kitchen from 12:00 midnight to 12:00 pm. In his chart, he had a prior claim of feeling depressed. Except his reasoning was because he didn’t want to be there [working].

God only knew if he dropped the crate accidentally or he did it on purpose to sustain injury. Because when taken off of work, he didn’t need to work but his penalty [sentence] would still be deducted with the time he needed to serve to pay for the crime he committed. Day after day. Whether working or not.

[Some of them are that way]…I grabbed an ace wrap dressing and slowly and carefully, I wrapped it around his painful right foot to immobilize and provide a little relief to his right foot.

[They don‘t want to work!]….I prepared the hospital referral form and requested a deputy to take him to our county’s hospital to have his right foot be x-rayed.

[They are lazy!]…I told him to be patient until the transportation deputy showed up to take him to the hospital.

Because some of the inmates believe that they are entitled to all the benefits the jail has to offer. Yet, they contribute “nothing”.

Newton’s first law of motion says that “an object in motion tends to remain in motion, and an object at rest tends to remain at rest.” This can apply to us, people. Some of us are willing to complete plans or projects yet, for others, they need to be motivated just to accomplish something.

There is no room for laziness in a Christian’s life. Being a new creation, we are to be diligent and productive. Out of love for our Lord Jesus. The One Who redeemed us. “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” - Ephesians 2:10

God wants us to be awake, be involved and focus on others.

Are you lazier than these "2 people"?

  1. This is a huge one for me. Since I'm not working, I struggle with this so much. God knows I want a job and am searching. Some days not as diligently as I should, though. It would be so easy to come back home after dropping my son off at school and go back to bed, but I don't want to be that way.

So in answer to your question, are you lazier than these two? I sure hope not!!! Lord help me not to be anyway.

Thank you for this post!!! :O)

    Hugs,
    Lisa

  2. Ha ha! Funny video. :) Great quote you have there as well, resting before you get tired. I seem to remember a person in the news that stabbed themselves or something so they would not have to go to work. OK, time for me to rise up and get more of my dishes done as well as dinner. Lovin' the family is the work I am about right now. Thanks for a great post.~

  4. Funny video.

Sometimes I've been almost that dumb; just in slightly less obvious situations. I sure am glad for God's mercy and grace and that I get more than one chance at things.

  5. I'm able to relate to your nursing stories a little better now that I have been nursing Mrs. Geezer back to health after the scheduled surgery she had on Monday.

God has given me the strength to do some things I didn't think I could do.

I've always had respect for nurses but this week it increased a whole bunch.

    God bless you sister Rosel,

    Ron

  6. When Jonathan Edwards was still a young man he wrote seventy resolutions. I think the sixth resolution captures the meaning of Paul’s words, “Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit.” Edwards wrote: “Resolved: To live with all my might while I live.”

Jesus speaks terrible words of warning to those who settle in with lukewarm affections for him. Revelation 3:15-16, “I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.”

The great commandment is “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind” (Luke 10:27). And God promises to be found by us when we see him with earnestness rather than half-heartedness.Jeremiah 29:13-14, “You will seek me and find me. When you seek me with all your heart, I will be found by you declares the Lord” (Jeremiah 29:13-14).

Over and over the Bible says: intensity matters. Zeal matters. Wholeheartedness matters. Don’t settle for anything less. We exist to spread a passion for the supremacy of God. You can’t spread what you don’t have. Ask God for it in constant prayer and ransack the Word of God for wonders that make you boil for Christ.

  7. Rosel,

I love this video and you know I know quite a few people that would do just that, nothing but wait and complain. It is amazing to see just how close they are to the top and yet do nothing.

Thank you for reminding us all, that there is always something to do.

    Love and Hugs ~ Kat

  9. I can relate to Lisa's comment. I, too, have many days where I want to come back home after taking Madison to school and go back to bed. I know that it would not accomplish anything and probably make me feel worse so I don't do it. I must admit to being lazy about reading my Bible lately. Thanks for the gentle reminder :) I hope you have a great weekend.

  11. The video is a hoot. And girl, laziness is such a drop of poison from the enemy.

Thanks for a wonderful, though provoking post as always.

  16. It is soo true. Laziness has become a real problem in America. I think those two in the video might be soo used to "riding" it never occured to them to "walk", haha...However, I feel like I have to tell this story. This happened to me once at a Mall with an escalator FULL of people. I like many others was in such a hurry that I immediately began climbing. Two seconds later the thing jerked to start up again and an elderly lady immediately fell stumbling back and tripping up a couple of others who were climbing as well. It was somewhat chaotic to say the least. Now if that were to happen to me again, I honestly might just stand there afriad of a repeat of that day. I just hope I don't get caught being lazy when I could be being productive for Him. Hugs, Debbie

  17. Oh how true this is. How this mindset is running rampant in our nation too!

As you quoted Newton's law of motion I thought how true that was in my life. I sometimes have a hard time getting started (needing a push) but once I get going you can't hardly get me to stop.

Much love to you my sister!

  18. Man, it's unbelievable how much goes on in the prison everyday! They sure keep you busy!

Laziness...my biggest struggle. Thanks for the great reminder, I needed to hear this.

  19. How many lives with tremendous potential to do something outstanding for God never materialize b/c of laziness? Good reminder to use our lives in his active service.

And I love this video. I posted it on my blog some months ago.

  20. Ah.......and OUCH!

Laziness creeps in so quickly....and disguises itself, doesn't it? We must remain steadfast and alert at all times!

That video is a trip, btw!

  21. the video was funny....the post great. Have a great weekend. I hope you're not working but can "laze" around with your family. ☺ Sarah

  22. LOL That video was hilarious! I tend to walk up and down escalators even when they are working. I don't have the patience to wait until the escalator brings me to the top or bottom of the stairs.

Being that I lack patience, I definately don't have a grain when it comes to laziness. I work for the dept. of labor as a vocational rehabilitation counselor and I can't begin to tell you how frustrating it is to try and help certain clients find employment and they won't work with me because they refuse to help themselves, so I know how you feel.

Thank you for posting this. It's so important that we don't allow idleness in our lives.

    God bless you!!
